TOURISM

The greatest potential to generate significantly increased employment opportunities within a short period of time is Tourism, and the government is vigorously promoting this Sector.

The government is expanding hotel facilities and attracting cruise ship traffic. Substantial expansion and improvement projects are underway at Piarco International Airport. Crown Point airport in Tobago has been expanded to receive direct international flights, and the Scarborough harbour can accommodate cruise ships and other large vessels.

Cruise ship arrivals in 1992 totaled 26,963 for Trinidad and Tobago. There were around 220,000 stopover visitors for 1992. The steady annual increase has continued. There were 32,572 cruise ship visitors in 1993, and around 248,815 stayover arrivals.

Trinidad and Tobago's accommodation stock was 2,700 rooms at the end of 1993, a 16.7% increase over 1992. Europeans now account for over half of all hotel tourist arrivals, followed by visitors from North America.

Tobago is the centre of tourism development, with promotion in Trinidad emphasising specialist holidays (wildlife, diving, nature, golf, steelbands) as well as the annual carnival.
